How is everyone doing after last week’s wild weather? The storms are awesome and powerful. Our earth is busy shifting, adjusting, and taking care of us. We think we’re in charge, but ultimately there is a higher power calling the shots. We can respond by keeping our environment clean and doing what we can to be prepared.

One day it’s sunny and the next is rainy. Thankfully, our neighborhood libraries have lots of fun indoor activities going on all through the summer. There’s something for everyone.

On Saturday, June 20, the Garfield Ridge Branch Library at 6348 S. Archer will host an Ice Cream Soda Party especially for seniors 55 years and up. Listen to tunes from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s performed by local musicians Bud and Marge, and enjoy an ice cream soda. The fun starts at 11:30 a.m. and goes to 1 p.m. Registration is required. Call 312-747-6094.

Kids ages 6 to 13 will want to visit the Garfield Ridge Library on Tuesdays in June and July. They can create a 3D master using LEGO building blocks. This library branch has a very large selection to choose from. The next building session takes place on June 23 from 2 to 3 p.m. Call the library to register.

The West Lawn Branch Library at 4020 W. 63rd Street has weekly Dungeons and Dragons game sessions for teens ages 13 through 19 on Saturdays in June and July. The next one will take place on June 20 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Call 312-747-7381 to register.

Also at West Lawn Library will be a one-of-a-kind show called Abra-Ka-Dabra Magic Show with Mr. Firu on Tuesday, June 23 from 11 a.m. to noon. There will be magic and music and lots of laughs, especially for youngsters ages toddler to 13. Call for more information and to register.

Alderman Silvana Tabares is working with the Greater Lawn WIC Clinic at 4150 W. 55th Street to provide monthly free fresh fruit and vegetables to southwest side families. The next distribution date is July 8 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thank you to all who make this happen every month!

Here’s a reminder. On Friday, June 19, a Cat and Dog Adoption Event will take place from 3 to 8 p.m. at the VFW Rhine Post at 5858 S. Archer. There will be lots of cats and dogs to adopt, pet supplies for sale, raffles, and food. Admission is free.

On Saturday, June 27 at 8 a.m., the Stars and Stripes 5K Run will take place at Wentworth Park at 5625 S. Narragansett. The race will be held in honor of fallen Chicago Firefighter Andrew Price. Call for more information at 312-747-6993.

Here’s some good news. The West Lawn Little League field at 64th and Kilbourn is getting a new turf baseball field. Construction has begun. I can’t wait to see it!

Here’s some more good news. Betty’s Ice Cream at 59th and Kedzie is open once again. Prayers have been answered. Betty is doing great. There was a very long line there last week. Yay! Now it really feels like summer.

Thank you to Hubbard High School musicians. They performed a saxophone concert at the Senior Center on Kedzie recently. My hubby was there, and he said the seniors loved it. At one point, many were dancing the polka. There was even a conga line. Music brings everyone together.

My deepest sympathy to the Hresil family on the passing of their beloved patriarch, George. He and his wife Pearl were married for 67 years. Condolences to his many friends, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. May his memory be a blessing.
