The La Grange Village Board unanimously proclaimed Sunday, Sept. 13, as Race Unity Day, marking the 35th annual race unity rally—an event organizers say reaffirms the community’s commitment to achieving racial unity.
This year’s celebration will include the honoring of two community members.
Tamiaka Killins, a Lyons Township High School math teacher and step team coach, will receive a service award.
Sherry Robinson, a former community diversity group board officer, will receive a diversity achievement award.
The unity rally will take place at 3 p.m. in the village hall auditorium. Reverend Meredith Onion of the First Congregational Church of Western Springs will deliver the invocation, and Katherine Padgett, immediate past president of the La Grange Area Historical Society, will speak.
The LT High School step team and the Caring Place Children’s Choir will perform.
In a related event, a screening and discussion of “My Omaha” is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m. at the La Grange Library.
The film follows a young filmmaker inspired by “A Time for Burning” as he returns to his Omaha hometown to investigate the current racial landscape and have conversations with his conservative father. Registration is required; details are available on the community diversity website.
