I would like to start my column with the most important news. National Hot Dog Day is Wednesday, July 17 and is traditionally celebrated all week. I decided to suggest two West Lawn restaurants for celebrating this beloved holiday.
First is my longtime favorite, Windy City Hot Dogs, 4205 W. 63rd St. Call them at 773-581-0332. My next suggestion is AV Anthony’s at 4720 W. 63rd Street. Their number is 773-585-7180. I thought of Anthony’s because I haven’t mentioned them in a long while and also because of their late night hours. Anthony’s is open every day until midnight. This will be convenient for late evening National Hot Dog Day parties. Celebrate responsibly.
Speaking of restaurants I haven’t mentioned in a while is Palermos at Hamlin and 63rd Street, 773-585-5002. This long time neighborhood favorite Italian eatery continues to delight us with their Sicilian style thin crust pizza and full dinner menu. I recently dined there with my dear friend Jennifer and her two adorable kids, Layla and Tommy. Tommy, who just happens to be my beloved godson, provided a lot of laughs with his enthusiasm and energy. I would especially like to wish lovely Layla a very happy ninth birthday! May your special day be as delightful as you are.

Here’s something for the kiddies. West Lawn Branch Library at 4020 W. 63rd Street will be presenting a bi-lingual reading readiness program for children ages 3 to 5 years old. The library is collaborating with WTTW Public Broadcasting television to create learn and play activities. This event takes place on Tuesday, July 23 at 11am. Registration is required. Call 312-747-7381.
Universidad Popular at 3702 W. 60th Street continues to offer English classes, yoga, Zumba, and computer basics as well as Diabetes prevention classes and provides many other services at their West Lawn and Pilsen locations. Call for more information at 773-352-8494. “Education with, by and for the people”.
The Polish American Culture Club will present their annual Scholarship and Dinner Dance on Sunday, August 4 from 11:30am to 3:30pm. There will be dancing, dinner, and raffles all for a good cause. Tickets are $40. The banquet location is on the north side. My good friend Richard will provide all the details and send you a registration form. Call him before July 24 at 847-209-1385.
Help stop crime in our community by attending the next 8th District Police CAPS Beat 813 meeting on Tuesday, July 23. The location is West Lawn Park Field House at 4233 W. 65th Street. The meeting begins at 7pm. I hope to see you there!
