The Chicago Police Department will present a program called Crime Victim Services on Wednesday, July 10 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the West Lawn Branch Library, 4020 W. 63rd St. The police will provide support and referral services to crime victims. For more information call 312-745-5900 or send an email to community@chicagopolice.org.

West Lawn Park, 4233 W. 65th St., will once again be the site of the annual National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 6. There will be train rides for the kiddies from 4 to 5:30 p.m., face painting, raffles, snacks and music by DJ Freddy. A “peace march” will start at 6:30 p.m. and the movie “Paw Patrol” will be shown at dusk. Call the Chicago Lawn (8th) District Police at 312-747-8724 with questions and more information.

The West Lawn Branch Library is a busy place.  On Wednesday, July 10 from 5 to 7 p.m., young people up to age 12 years old are invited to a Pokemon Hangout where they can trade cards, make art and play games with other Pokemon fans.

On Saturday, July 13 from 10 a.m. to noon the library will show a documentary called Live at Mr. Kelly. This film tells the story of Chicago’s legendary night club Mr. Kelly’s. During the 50s, 60s, and 70s, Mr. Kelly’s transformed entertainment in America and launched the careers of many famous comedians like Richard Pryor, the Smothers Brothers, Steve Martin and many others.  Call the library at 312-747-7381 for more information on this and all other library events.

Thirteenth Ward Ald. Marty Quinn will have his next monthly meeting with senior citizens on Friday, July 12 at 9 a.m. The meeting will take place at the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture, 6500 S. Pulaski. RSVP to Barb at 773-581-1313 by Tuesday, July 11.

The long-empty and shuttered Bank of America building at 61st and Pulaski will now be the home of a new coin laundry. This is not the most exciting news, but at least the building will be used for something.  A bank building being replaced by a laundry–this could be the perfect lead-in to a money laundering joke. If you can think of one, let me know.

A “Pop Up Market” will take place at 6534 S. Pulaski on Saturday, July 6 from noon to 6 p.m. There will be drinks and snacks, vendors, music and dancing. Call Liz at 773-603-8816 for more information.

Taquitos Chicago, 6532 S. Pulaski, is now open. The hours will be perfect for night owls. They open at 5 p.m. and close at 5 a.m. every day except Thursdays. Neighbors are raving about the wood-fired meats, burritos, tacos, house made salsas, horchatas and desserts. Call them at 773-234-1249.

Also recently opened, just down the street from Taquitos Chicago, is the Family Dollar store at 6540 S. Pulaski. I received a lot of calls about this popular store which was closed for a long while due to remodeling.

The Walgreens at Pulaski and 59th Street will finally be open after extensive repairs and remodeling needed as a result of the destruction and vandalism during 2020. This Walgreens store recently had a soft opening.  Twenty-third Ward Ald. Silvana Tabares attended this event and announced that our neighborhood Walgreens will be open to the public later this month.

Saving the best for last. The Calvary Senior Club would like to wish very happy July birthday wishes to Katie G. and Mary S. May the Lord bless these wonderful ladies on their birthdays and all through the coming year with good health and happiness.
