Nancy Amalie (Rehor) Skowron, 94, of Romeoville, Illinois, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2026, in Joliet, Illinois.
She was born on November 22, 1931, in Chicago to Frank and Ana (Pokorny) Rehor and grew up in the Chicago area. Her parents eventually moved to Hayward, Wisconsin, where they operated a fishing resort. It was there she met Mitchell J. Skowron, the love of her life. She was working seasonally for the resort when he arrived with his fishing buddies. They were married on October 5, 1951, and remained married for 63 years until his death.
The couple lived in Chicago for a few years before moving to a home they built in Lyons, Illinois. After raising six children there, they retired to the country in Wilmington, Illinois.
Nancy loved gardening. She transformed a 3-acre cornfield into flower gardens, vegetable gardens, and fruit tree orchards. She was particularly proud of the 50-foot stone wall she built, rock by rock, and spent many hours riding her golf cart around the property.
She worked as a librarian in Lyons and later at the libraries of Morton College and Argonne National Laboratory. Nancy was an avid reader who likely read hundreds of books in her lifetime. She enjoyed playing cards with friends and loved ones but treasured most the time spent with her family.
In her later years, Nancy moved to assisted living at StoryPoint in Romeoville. Though it was not the home she had built in Wilmington, she found it welcoming because the nurses and aides became friends as well as caretakers.
She was known for her positive outlook, sharp humor, and uplifting nature. Nancy had a gift for offering wise, caring advice to those around her.
She is survived by her children: Robert (Rebecca) Skowron of Franktown, Colorado; Loretta Skowron of Champaign, Illinois; Annette Skowron of Salem, Oregon; Paul (Nancy) Skowron of Loveland, Colorado; and Janet (Skowron) (Dan) Jay of Wilmington, Illinois; 10 grandchildren: Michael Skowron, Nicolette Day, Joseph Taylor Gooch, Mitchell Benjamin Gooch, Natalia (Gooch) Newman, Svetlana Gooch, Elizabeth Skowron, Mariah Skowron, Cody Jay, and Shane Jay; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mitchell Skowron; her daughter, Natalie Skowron; and her brother, Franklin Rehor.
Graveside Service: Saturday, August 29, 2026, 12 p.m. at Resurrection Cemetery, 7201 S. Archer Avenue, Justice, Illinois, Staging Area “A.” Family and friends are asked to gather directly at the cemetery. Family and friends will have an opportunity to share their memories during the service.
