Congratulations to all who have celebrated with spring festivities. They are winding down now, the Communions, Confirmations and now graduations. Thoughts turn to summer vacations and hot dogs on the grill. It will go by fast.
The Movies in the Park events have started. Archer Park, 4901 S. Kilbourn, will host Wonka (the story of Willy Wonka) on June 28, starting at dusk (about 8:30). The movie will be shown behind the gym, so bring a chair, popcorn and a pop! Hey, it’s Willy Wonka–so make sure you bring some chocolate, too.

The students of Peck Elementary School celebrated Spirit Week late last month. The weather was perfect for them as each grade had its own time to come out to the playground for various events. On Tuesday, the kids played with hula hoops. On Wednesday, there was singing just about all day. As I sat on my porch, I heard each classroom sing the same song over and over and over. But it sure is enjoyable for the children. On Friday, a carnival was held. What a great way to end the school year.
With the school year ending, I am going to miss the soft-serve ice cream man who parks on the corner of 58th. I have made the bad habit of visiting him. It is not too easy to find soft-serve in a truck anymore–and boy, it’s good. Hope he comes around during summer.
Boys who attend St. Bruno & Richard School recently danced the night away at “To the Moon and Back,” a heartfelt mother/son dance. The school’s girls running team represented the school in the “Girls on the Run” 5K held downtown. “Girls on the Run” is designed to inspire participants to be physically active and have confidence to stand up for themselves and others.
William “Jack” Dempsey was a professional boxer who reigned as heavyweight champion from 1919 to 1926. Dempsey had a punching power and a certain fighting style. Hence, my neighbor around the corner has a Dempsey, as well. Dempsey is a little dog rescued from an animal shelter. Dempsey had a rough past, but survived. He is a fighter and from now on, his name is Dempsey. Welcome to the family of dogs in our neighborhood. Dempsey now is sporting the “cone of shame” due to him being “snipped.”
