May 24 is National Brothers Day. The word “brother” comes from the Latin root for “frater” and the Proto-Germanic word “brothar” which itself comes from the Proto-Indo-European root “bhrater.” I’m sure everyone already knows that, but I thought I’d share the information anyway.
I have two brothers, Mike and Steve. They are 10 years apart in age. One is my little brother and one is my big brother. Ever since I can remember, my kids have called Mike, Uncle Shifty. They call Steve, Shifty Elder. They have not only been the most fun uncles in the world to my kids, they have been the best brothers a gal could hope for. If you are lucky enough to have a wonderful brother or if you have someone in your life who is like a brother, call him and tell him Happy Brothers Day.

Maybe you might want to take your brother out for a quick bite to eat. I suggest Windy City Hot Dogs, 4205 W. 63rd St. They are open every day except Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Windy City is family owned and has been in business for 22 years, so they know a thing or two about hot dogs and much more. I’ve always been partial to their Italian beef and their gyros. Now that it is warm outside, you can eat at their outdoor picnic tables.
Perhaps you would like to take your brother to brunch. Recently, hubby and I dined at Huck Finn Restaurant, 6650 S. Pulaski. They have made some changes over the years. The restaurant used to be open 24/7. Now I believe they are open ‘til 9 p.m. daily, but call them at (773) 581-4285 to double check.
I hadn’t been to Huck Finn’s for a long while. We were pleasantly surprised at their breakfast items. I had a skillet, hubby had the cinnamon roll French toast. Both were nicely prepared, generous portions and very tasty. Our wait person couldn’t have been nicer. Best of all: the coffee. We didn’t get there ‘til noon and I hadn’t had any coffee yet. Coffee is my life blood, and Huck Finn’s coffee is tremendously life-saving. I think it is the best coffee around! So good I could hardly talk. Obviously, hubby was thrilled.
If you are looking for a convenient place to grab a taco, a burrito, a quesadilla or a torta, I suggest Esparza’s Tacos, 6610 S. Pulaski. They also have complete dinners and special ice cream confections. Dine in or carry out. Call (773) 424-7059. This is a brand-new business. Check it out. The staff is super friendly.
Pulaski is a busy street with shops and restaurants and sadly, a lot of car accidents. This is due to speeding drivers. I hesitate to suggest visiting restaurants and businesses on Pulaski because of all the injuries and deaths that have occurred in the past year. It was recently reported that the Honda City auto dealership at 49th and Pulaski was the latest location of an accident. A driver crashed into the side of the building. This is right across the street from Curie High School. Something must be done.
In response to this situation, the Southwest Collective group is sponsoring walks along Pulaski. They take note of walking conditions and traffic speeds, and then they write suggestions of how the street can be improved. If you would like to be a part of this group, call (708) 740-8914 to get a schedule of their upcoming walks.
I heard that Oak Street Health is opening a new clinic at the corner of 63rd and Pulaski. Hopefully, the clinic won’t be hit by a speeding car. Oak Street Health focuses on senior citizens. Their expected opening date is June 7.
The next CAPS meeting for Beats 813 and 833 will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 28 at West Lawn Park, 4233 W. 65th St. The problem of speeding drivers on Pulaski will most likely be a topic of discussion.
Thirteenth Ward Ald. Marty Quinn is hosting a senior citizen meeting at 9 a.m. Friday, May 31 at the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture, 6500 S. Pulaski. Call Barb at (773) 581-1313 to register.
I hope everyone has a safe and pleasant week.
