It is officially April. That means sweet sweeping will be starting again. Be on the lookout for the No Parking signs to avoid a ticket.
It is also garage sale time. Garage sale permits are required and we can have up to two per year. Permit applications are available at your alderman’s office, an ID will be required. If you have a lively, fun block, block party permits will also be available starting on April 15. Half the households on your block must consent to the party.
A welcome sight to my eyes appeared in the early afternoon of March 28. The garden tent at the local grocery was being put up. Planting season is one of my favorite times of the year. But I should learn my lesson by now. I can’t wait to plant and usually do it at the end of April. Then I am worrying about a potential frost, so it’s better to wait until early May. Another welcome sight was running into Karen Sala at the store.
Some programs over at the Archer Heights Branch Library have been changed partly due to the children’s librarian leaving. But there is still help with homework every Sunday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m. A certified teacher will be on hand to help for kids in pre-K through high school. There are a variety of programs for the teen clubs on Thursdays starting at 4 p.m.
Congratulations to the Sts. Bruno & Richard 5th/6th grade girls volleyball team. They clinched the West Lawn Park championship title in a thrilling game. The school, 5025 S. Kenneth, will be having an open house on April 21 from 10 a.m. to noon. Come explore the classrooms and hear about the educational opportunities if interested in enrollment for 2024-25.
The CAPS Beat 822 meeting was held on April 2, for which I am late reporting. But I will give an update next time.
