The City of Palos Heights has once again had to postpone its fireworks celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States following another severe weather event on August 13.
After severe thunderstorms on July 3 cancelled the fireworks for Independence Day the city rescheduled them to coincide with The Chicago Experience concert in the park, but the city was once again hit with heavy rain, postponing the concert and the fireworks.
The concert has been rescheduled for Sunday, August 30, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Memorial Park. There will not be fireworks after the show.
Alderman Jefferey Key stated at the August 18 City Council meeting that the city is working to reschedule both events.
The Throwbacks, who were originally scheduled to perform on July 3 before the fireworks and were forced to cancel their performance, have been rescheduled to perform on September 10 at 6:30 p.m. at Memorial Park.
The City Council also reminded residents that the city will be holding a remembrance ceremony for the 25th anniversary of 9/11 at city hall, 7607 W. College Drive, on Friday, September 11 at 7:30 a.m.
The ceremony will include a performance by musicians and the unveiling of a new monument dedicated to the first responders who were killed in the attacks and subsequent rescue efforts, which will stand alongside the city’s existing monument to the victims of the attacks.
Mayor Robert Straz encouraged residents to attend, especially families with children who are too young to remember the actual event.
