Douglas C. “Doug” Gehrling Sr. of Crown Point, Indiana. He was 60.

A lifelong mechanic with a gift for fixing almost anything, Mr. Gehrling spent decades working on cars — first with AMC and Plymouth, later with Chrysler Dodge Jeep and Ram — and brought that same hands-on spirit to his home and hobbies. He was proudest of his 1967 AMC AMX with a 390 engine, a car he restored and cherished.

But his real passion was his family. He was a devoted husband to Lisa Gehrling; a father to Danielle, Douglas Jr., Katie Koziol, and Jeanne Wishard; and a grandfather to nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Dr. Denise Gehrling and Donald Gehrling.

He is also survived by his brother, Dennis Gehrling, and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

Gehrling was a 1984 graduate of Wyoming Technical Institute. He loved the outdoors, boating, and grilling after work — no matter the hour. He was known for his rare sense of humor and his ability to strike up a conversation, often departing gatherings with characteristic Irish flair.

A memorial visitation and funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Palos-Gaidas Funeral Home, 11028 Southwest Highway, Palos Hills, Illinois. Visitation begins at 6 p.m.; the service is at 7:30 p.m.
