Peotone senior forward Allie Werner scored five goals in three soccer games on April 18 and became the program’s all-time leading scorer.

She entered the weekend quadrangular at Coal City tied for the lead with 98 goals. After the Blue Devils beat Coal City 3-0, defeated Princeton 2-0 and lost 5-1 to Kaneland, her total stood at 103.

“I’m really proud of myself,” Werner said. “My freshman year, I didn’t know I was going to come close to that. I didn’t even know what that number was.

“Ever since last year when coach (Ryan) Murray told me the number, I said, ‘I’ve gotta reach that. I’m competitive and I set a goal and I wanted to reach that. But if I didn’t reach that, I would have been very disappointed in myself.”

Werner is heading to Olivet Nazarene next season. She plans to study business and hopes to own her own business someday. Her father, John, owns  Werner’s Landscaping and Lawn Care in Peotone and her uncle, Jeff, owns Werner Builders in Bonfield.

Right now, she is owning scoring records and Murray has been having fun watching her play.

“She’s definitely very fast,” Murray said. “But it’s more her touch and game IQ. She will outrace most players but her first touch is amazing.

“She’s almost equally talented with her right and left foot. That’s very difficult for an opposing player to deal with as she can go to either side and she has a pretty significant shot.”

In grade school, she played coed soccer.

“Even though the boys usually don’t want to pass to the girls, Allie was pretty much the best player out there,” Murray said. “She’s the most complete player — boy or girl — who I ever coached.”

Heading into this week’s play, the Blue Devils were 7-2. Werner had 19 goals and Peyton Bisping added seven to go with a team-high six assists. Sophomore goalie Bella Allen had 43 saves.

Panthers softball on roll

Manteno’s softball team improved to 11-1 overall and 6-0 in the Illinois Central Eight with a pair of wins over Reed-Custer and two more over Lisle last week.

The most interesting win in that group was an 11-0 victory over Reed-Custer on April 14 when the Panthers exploded for nine runs in the sixth inning to break open a close game.

Ginny Kvasnicka drove in three runs in that game and Mady Dye and Maddy Delya combined to pitch the win.

Peotone softball wins thriller

Peotone’s softball team snapped a two-game losing streak by beating Marian Catholic 1-0 on April 16 when Jillian Roark’s sacrifice fly brought home Payton Schnelle in the bottom of the seventh.

Sophie Klawitter gave up one hit and struck out 14 in the win for the Blue Devils (6-7).

Manteno soccer falls in PKs

Manteno’s girls soccer team dropped an Illinois Central Eight game to Reed-Custer in the penalty-kick round on April 16 in Braidwood after the score was knotted at 3-3 in regulation.

Emily Horath scored three goals for the Panthers (4-6, 0-2).
