The sound of music and laughter echoed through Oak Lawn Community High School on April 9 as student musicians welcomed a visiting group from Minneapolis South High School for a day of collaboration and connection.
Students in the Oak Lawn Community High School Music Department hosted the South Tigers for a full day of performances and shared learning. The visit brought together young musicians from two different parts of the country, all eager to play, learn and connect.
Each group started by performing for one another, giving students a chance to hear different styles and approaches. Afterward, they came together as one ensemble to work on an arrangement of Prince’s “Purple Rain,” combining their talents in a joint rehearsal.
Throughout the day, students traded ideas, practiced side by side and got to know one another beyond the music. Directors guided the sessions, but much of the energy came from the students themselves as they worked together and built something new.
By the end of the visit, the experience had grown into more than just a performance. Students walked away with new friendships and a shared sense of accomplishment.
School officials said opportunities like this show how music can bring people together and create lasting connections, both inside and outside the classroom.
