A Worth bakery became the setting for a failed shopping spree when a man tried to use a stolen credit card to buy thousands of dollars in goods, Palos Heights police said.
The case began Sept. 2 when a Palos Heights resident reported her new Wells Fargo credit card never arrived in the mail. She later received alerts for two attempted charges of $12,000 and $5,000 at the bakery. Both transactions were declined, police said.
Surveillance video showed a man attempting the purchases and arriving in a white Mercedes G-Wagon with Texas plates. Using License Plate Reader cameras, police tracked the vehicle to a luxury rental business, which then provided the renter’s information.
Investigators linked the suspect’s phone at the bakery at the same time the charges were attempted, police said.
On Sept. 26, police arrested Sahran Almasri, 37, at his home in the 16300 block of Parliament Avenue in Tinley Park. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved one felony count of identity theft.
Almasri was cited and released and is scheduled to appear at the Bridgeview Courthouse at a later date.
