A familiar face is stepping into a key leadership role at Consolidated High School District 230, where Candace Johnson has been named director of communications and public relations.

Johnson, a District 230 alum with more than 20 years of experience in strategic communications and marketing, was approved for the position by the school board. She replaces Jennifer Waterman, who will retire June 30 after more than three decades in school communications.

Before returning to her alma mater, Johnson built a career leading marketing and communications efforts across multiple industries. Her experience includes serving as senior content marketing manager for BluSky Restoration Contractors, as well as holding long-term leadership roles with J.C. Restoration, Inc. and Rose Paving, LLC, where she focused on brand strategy, messaging, and public outreach.

District officials said Johnson’s background in both corporate communications and community-facing storytelling positions her to strengthen engagement with families, staff, and the broader community. Her work has included social media strategy, crisis communications, and campaigns highlighting organizational programs and people.

Johnson said returning to the district carries personal meaning.

“As a District 230 alum and current member of this community, I couldn’t be more excited to step into this role to help celebrate students and support families with confidence, care, and impact from day one,” she said.

Superintendent Dr. Bob Nolting said Johnson stood out for her communication expertise and connection to the community.

“Candace will be an outstanding addition to our team,” Nolting said. “With her extensive background as a strategic communicator, she is uniquely positioned to maximize our public relations efforts. We are eager to partner with her to optimize our community outreach and enhance the district’s positive visibility.”

Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, IN. She also serves on the executive board and volunteers as marketing lead for the Tinley Park Bobcats youth sports organization.
