Temps were hot, but golfers were cool

The weekend of June 22/23 started with temps in the 90s, a high humidity both days and the threat of rain loomed throughout the weekend as well. This is not unusual for the third week in June, many times it rains, sometimes heavy storms even. But the roasting temperatures fueled by the humidity was not enough to keep the duffers from the 41^st Senior Amateur Golf Championship at Marquette Park. The golfers are indeed a hearty group.

First place this year was taken by John Gollwitzer with a score of 75 for the first round and 76 for the second. Second place was claimed by Matthew Mcintee with a first-round score of 76 and 78 for the second. Pretty impressive.

Over at the Southwest Regional Senior Center, 6117 S. Kedzie Avenue, today, Friday, July 5, is Chat with the Director at 10 a.m. followed by a Mariachi Performance at noon. And Monday, July 8, is a Patriotic Movie Marathon beginning at 9 a.m.

Then next Thursday, July 11, at the Center, beginning at 10:30 a.m. is a Passport to the World Meal, this month featuring French Cuisine and karaoke with Johnny.

Parishioners and friends of Nativity BVM parish will gather on Saturday, July 6, to Commemorate the Crowning of Mindaugas, who was the first known Grand Duke of Lithuania and the only crowned King of the country. In Lithuania this is a national holiday.

Lithuanians throughout the world will gather on July 6^th at the same time. At Nativity, folks will meet outside of the Church, near the Lithuanian Flag at 1 p.m. to carry on this beautiful and unique tradition.  After singing the national anthem, there will be the opportunity to have lunch and cold drinks in the parish hall.

On Sunday, July 7, Community Cinema brings the 1997 Warner Bros film Selena to the Chicago Lawn Library, 6120 S. Kedzie Avenue, beginning at 2 p.m.

On Tuesday, July 9, I’s DIY Adult Crafts at the library from 5 to 6 p.m. Explore your creative side and make a pretty dome magnet to take home with you!

And mark your calendars for Music Bingo at the library next Friday, July 12, from 2 to 3 p.m. Join in for a fun twist to Bingo and listen to top music hits from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.  Listen carefully and fill your song title bingo cards for fun prizes!

Wednesday July 10, is Open Nature Play Day at Dan Ryan Woods. Bring the kids, ages 3 to 10, out to enjoy the play space in the woods and help them connect with nature. They will enjoy stories, arts and do some exploring. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the Visitor Center, on the corner of 87^th and Western, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Over at St. Rita of Cascia Parish, Thursday, July 11, is outdoor movie night at 7:30 p.m.

And then next weekend St. Rita parish will host a Garage Sale on the St. Clare of Montefalco Campus, 2640 w. 55^th Street, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you are interested in selling at the event, the cost is $30 for a space. Call the parish office at (773) 434-9600.

Now back to 1964. When we left last week, Talman Federal had just taken over the assets and liabilities of Property Federal Savings and Loan. I wondered if anyone remembered where Property Federal was located. James S. identified it right away. Sitting on the north side of 69^th Street between Rockwell and Talman, James passed it on his way to school every day. I had to go by because I just couldn’t picture the building. Once I saw it, right away it looked a bit like the original Talman that I have seen in photos from way back when.

Sixty years ago, Ed Vondrak, then publisher of the Southwest News-Herald, was urging the city fathers to increase the time on parking meters lining major thoroughfares in Chicago Lawn and Marquette Manor to two hours to allow for leisurely shopping in the community.

The request was granted and the new two-hour meters were ordered. How much do you suppose it cost to park at a meter in 1964? The new meters had two slots, one for a nickel and one for a dime. And in case you were wondering, there were 612 meters in the community at the time.

Over at 63^rd and Spaulding, a Chicago Lawn landmark was coming under the wrecking ball. It had been a cornerstone of the community since 1922. Any guesses what that building would have been?
