“Summer was our best season. It was sleeping on the screened porch on cots, or trying to sleep in the treehouse, summer was everything good to eat. It was a thousand colors in a parched landscape.” (from the book To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee)

Little League season has begun. Children and adults are playing soccer in the park. West Lawn Park summer camps are in session. The skateboard area is busy. Babies are being pushed in strollers. Flowers are blooming. The sounds of lawn mowers and basketballs bouncing are with us once again.

Summer is here. We wait all year for this. May it be a good season.

Madigan Park, 4701 W. Marquette Road, will host a charity event called Cops and DJs. The Chicago Police Knights Baseball Club and the Midway Baseball and Softball Association are partnering on Sunday, June 30. All are invited. First pitch is at noon.

The next CAPS Beats 813/833 is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 25 at West Lawn Park, 4233 W. 65th St. For more information, call (312) 747-8724.

If you do any walking through our neighborhood, you have probably noticed flowers and plants at some of the traffic circles. The West Lawn Conservation Club has been busy beautifying several areas throughout West Lawn. Last week, volunteers planted shrubs near 61st and Karlov. Call WLCC president Adolfo at (773) 474-6110 if you would like to be a part of this wonderful group of people who are making a positive difference in our neighborhood.

The positive efforts of the WLCC volunteers are such a contrast to all the inconsiderate people in our neighborhood who choose to set off fireworks at all times of day and night. This ignorant behavior creates not only a noise problem but a garbage problem. In addition, the explosions are traumatic to veterans and frightening to dogs and cats. I suggest that the people who actually enjoy wasting hundreds of dollars on illegal fireworks take that money and buy food for local pet shelters instead. Be a help instead of a hindrance.

The CTA Orange Line terminal, 59th and Cicero, now has an art installation. It is a large geometric sculpture made of steel painted bright orange. The artist, Jerald Jacquard, created this sculpture entitled Space Junction of Energy. His intention was to energize the viewer.

The West Lawn Branch Library, 4020 W. 63rd St., has two exciting events coming up for kids ages 6 to 13. On Wednesday, June 26 at 6 p.m. the library staff will teach children how to create slime. Kids can play with the stuff and take their slime home. All materials will be provided.

On Thursday, June 27 from 4 to 5 p.m. the library will transform into a dance wonderland called Silent Disco. Children will be provided with personal headphones. As they listen to music they can dance to their own beat while the library remains quiet. Registration is required for both events. Call (312) 747-7381 for details.

A big thank you to Carol K., who sent me a booklet called The Old Farmer’s Almanac of Backyard Birds and Butterflies. I have been enjoying reading about our winged garden friends. Carol, I appreciate your kindness.

Thank you to Pat P. for your lovely card. Made my day!
