We have made it to see the light. Daylight Savings Time begins this weekend, with days getting longer by the minute and daylight hanging around a lot longer.

It is time to consider buying our corned beefs. Hopefully, the local markets will be running some sales. The South Side Irish parade is on St. Patrick’s Day this year, falling on a Sunday. I have already been invited to a party close to the parade. Hopefully I can get away for a few hours; after all I already bought the bottle of Bailey’s Irish Cream to bring along.

Last week I wrote how I missed our local parishes’ St. Joseph and St. Patrick tables. What I also really miss this time of year is the fish fry at the old Desplaines Valley VFW Post on 63^rd Street in Summit. The Stanek family, cousins included, would really have a great time with good food and drink.

West of us in Garfield Ridge, there will be a fish fry on March 15 and 22 at St. Daniel the Prophet’s Brennan Hall, 54^th and Natoma. It’s sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Cardinal Cody Assembly and runs from 5 to 8 p.m. There will be a raffle with prizes such as a 55-inch TV. The event is BYOB if you choose to bring a libation while you are enjoying fried fish, coleslaw and tater tots.

Chicago Public Schools spring break will start on March 25. That may alleviate some traffic for a week.

Congratulations to Sts. Bruno & Richard first-grade Eagles, who were victorious in the SMSA Indoor Soccer League. They trained tirelessly while being taught by their dedicated coaches. They have shown what the power of unity and hard work can do.

Identity theft is a crime in which an imposter obtains key pieces of your personal information such as your Social Security number or driver’s license number, and goes on to impersonate you. The thief can then open accounts, make purchases and affect your taxes, just to name some of the trouble that can occur.

There will be an identity theft presentation at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 20 at the Garfield Ridge Satellite Senior Center, 5674-B S. Archer (at Laramie). Registration is not necessary. All Southwest Siders are welcome to enjoy the programs at the center.

“The Way We Were,” sung by Barbara Streisand, may have brought you to tears. Or you may have danced to the “Locomotion” by Grand Funk Railroad. If going to the movie theater, Blazing Saddles or Towering Inferno may have been your choice. Sitting down to read a good scary book, Stephen King’s “Carrie” was available.

The year was 1974 and that was the year I graduated St. Turibius Grade School. In fact, most of my friends also graduated grade school in 1974. Most of my friends are now planning 50^th reunions. The St. Turibius group has already started discussions, and the St. Mary Star of the Sea group has plans already in action. If you are or know of alumni, please contact me and I will get them to the right individuals.
