One more week to get through this long, long month. While the weather has been cooperative so far, this February is exceptionally long. It is a leap year. Leap Day, Feb. 29, is needed every four years because of the Earth’s orbit around the sun not being a complete 365 days but actually 365.2422 days.
I confused Feb. 29 with Sadie Hawkins Day, but it is Bachelor’s Day, according to Irish legend, where women are allowed to propose marriage.
I was in a drug store on Valentine’s Day and already jelly beans are appearing on the counter. Also, many activities are being planned for St. Patrick’s Day, which falls on a Sunday this year. Over in Garfield Ridge, a St. Patrick’s Day Parade is planned for Saturday, March 16 stepping off at noon and moving along Archer Avenue from Oak Park to Narragansett. Mark your calendars.
According to a social media post, 132 automobile accidents causing serious injury have occurred along Pulaski in Archer Heights between January 2018 and February 2024. Fourteenth Ward Ald. Jeylú Gutiérrez plans to hold a community meeting addressing this issue. I will keep an eye out if I see more information.
There is a new senior citizen club that has formed at Archer Park, 4901 S. Kilbourn. Unfortunately, I am a little late in finding out about it. The club meets Wednesday and Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m. running through March 22. One can socialize with neighbors and friends and participate in activities such as bingo, cards and board games. You can register in person or online at chicagoparkdistrict.com. This is activity #470638. Hopefully, the club is not yet full.
Super bingo will be played at Sts. Bruno & Richard Parish this coming Saturday, Feb. 24. The doors open at 4:30 p.m. and the games begin at 6. Come out to relax, have fun, eat good food and hopefully win! This bingo will be played in St. Richard Church hall, 50th and Kenneth. Do not forget there is always bingo played at St. Bruno gym, 4839 S. Harding, every Friday night. Those doors open at 4:30 p.m., and the games begin at 6:45.
February is Black History Month. The first grade students of Sts. Bruno & Richard School immersed themselves in history learning about civil rights leaders, artists and scientists. Colorful presentations were prepared, along with storytelling and interactive activities.
Birthday wishes this week go out to Mr. Long, math teacher at Peck School and Grazyna Zubek-Potasnik. Belated birthday wishes are felt for my favorite Guide’s bartender, Daria.
