Happy Birthday, President Abraham Lincoln and President George Washington.
Birthday wishes go out to several of my friends this middle of the month, February. Nancy Kunze is celebrating on Feb. 16. My dear friend and best Chicago Bears buddy, Judie Amato, celebrates on Feb. 17. The two of us will also celebrate with a lunch or dinner at Angie’s Sports Bar on Pulaski (our usual stomping grounds for Bear football).
Classmate Elizabeth Bowler celebrates on Feb. 22. And my travel buddy, Mary G., also is celebrating on that date. If things get better at my home front, I hope to consider traveling once again with Mary. Unfortunately, our plans to San Antonio in March had to be canceled. Thank you for the patience, Mary.
We attended (yes, both Robert and I) the CAPS Beat 822/824 meeting on Feb. 6. It was quite the pleasure to have both 23rd Ward Ald. Silvana Tabares and 15th Ward Ald. Raymond Lopez in attendance.
After the general low-down on crime statistics, several area residents spoke their worries about the migrant situation. Both aldermen were sympathetic, concerned and reassured the community.
Thank you to the police officers who attended the meeting. I do not really understand why more people in the community do not attend. It is only an hour of one’s time. The next meeting is scheduled for April, and I will write a friendly reminder. A clean-up event is also being planned.
Here is something I ponder as a writer. Is it correct to use the term “alderman” for both genders or should one use the gender specific terms “alderman” and “alderwoman”? Or, would “alderperson” be even better? It’s sort of like the term “mailman” being phased out for “letter carrier.”
Another grammar issue I ponder is the up-and-coming holiday Presidents Day, President’s Day or Presidents’ Day. Hmm?
It has almost been a year since CPD Officer Andrés Vásquez Lasso lost his life in the line of duty serving our community. On Saturday, March 2, an honorary street sign dedication ceremony, will be held at noon. The ceremony will be held at the corner of Marquette and Lawndale. Officer Lasso is survived by his wife, mother and sister.
There will be a craft lab for adults at our Archer Heights Branch Library, 5055 S. Archer. One could learn how to decoupage on glass that will allow you to upgrade everyday glass items. The workshop will be held on Monday, March 11 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Please visit the librarian to register or chipublib.org for more information. I always suggest visiting the library. It is a treasure.
