If there is one thing my father taught me that I will always appreciate, is to know where I was born and raised: on the South Side, which explains why I am a White Sox fan to the very end.
The year 2005 was great. Thankfully, I was out of the country in October/November 2016.
Another thing he firmly held to his heart were the Chicago Cardinals. My father was never a Bears fan. In fact, when I would treat him to a game, he would cheer for the visitors–even the Packers.
If I am correct with history the Cardinals played in Chicago from 1921-1959 on the South Side. But their roots are deeper than that.
Though it isn’t in West Elsdon or Archer Heights, a presentation on the Bears-Cardinals rivalry is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20 at the Clearing Branch Library, 6423 W. 63rd Place.
Sports historian Joe Ziemba will be the featured speaker. Mr. Ziemba’s father was a draft choice for the Chicago Cardinals. There is no admission charge, but a donation can be made to the non-profit Clear-Ridge Historical Society, sponsor of the event.
A “vehicle safety day” is set for 8 to 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 9 at the CTA’s Orange Line station at 51st and Pulaski. While supplies last, vehicle wheel locks (more commonly known as “the Club”—the trade name of the anti-theft product first made popular in the 1980s) will be given away by police to Kia and Hyundai owners. To qualify, vehicles must be registered to an address in the Chicago Lawn (8th) District. Owners must call ahead to the district’s CAPS Office at (312) 747-8724.
The students of Sts. Bruno & Richard School honored their grandparents with a blessing and Mass at St. Richard Church on Sept. 10. If only I had my grandmom back to hear her stories and most of all share in her recipes, especially kapusta. The children should take the time to cherish their roots.
Happy Birthday to Geri Biel on the 21st. Congratulations to Sister Mary Beth from St. Turibius convent on her new position of ministry with the Archdiocese of Chicago. Thankfully she will still be involved with the St. Turibius St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry and the wonderful work they perform for the community.
I would like to thank Officer Taylor from the 8th District for giving me a call. He was following up on our shooting situation from July 3. It’s nice to know they do care.
Thanks to the folks on 57th Place and 58th Street for cutting the rug. We had a party, party! Thank you to Robert Djneeto Santana. I chose him only because he was the first DJ to respond. He was great, quite the professional. The only issue was the weather. It was 95 degrees in the shade. But a couple of cold Modelos helped the situation.
