Even in Goode’s deep running back room, there’s always an opportunity for someone new to step up and contribute.

Lately, that player has been junior Gabriel Chambers-Crosby, who had touchdown runs in a win against Brooks in Week 7 and another in a 31-24 home loss against Ag. Science on Oct. 8.

The latter was a 50-yarder, establishing Chambers-Crosby as another breakaway threat for the Knights (5-2, 4-1 Public League Red Southwest) along with fellow backs Aedan Cleveland and Caron Williams and quarterback Jordan Boston.

“That middle run that we did, that little wedge — he broke it for a touchdown,” Goode coach Terrence McClarn said. “It’s amazing. Like I said, he’s growing and growing.”

Chambers-Crosby gave the credit to one of his senior linemen.

“I saw Ryan come up, Ryan Ogburn,” Chambers-Crosby said. “He came up and blocked the dude right in front of me and I just saw him open it up right there and I just took it.”

Cleveland had 11 carries for 133 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Knights, while Chambers-Crosby finished with five runs for 107 yards.

“I’ve been putting in work in practice, trying to get everybody on pace and trying to build myself to be what my past predecessors (were),” Chambers-Crosby said.

Turnovers put Goode into a 19-0 hole in the first quarter. But the Knights rallied to get within one twice, at 19-18 and 25-24, before falling.

“Yeah, we’ve got to do a better job of taking care of the ball,” McClarn said. “That’s pretty much it. … But I do like how the guys (were) fighting. … I’m glad the guys kept playing and fighting to the end.”

Back of the Yards 41, Noble Street 6: Alejandro Anguiano ran six times for 97 yards and three touchdowns and returned an interception for a fourth TD to lead Back of the Yards (4-4, 3-2 Public League Blue South) on Oct. 8.

David Villa and David Villasenor also ran for scores for the Bobcats, who recovered three onside kicks.

Gage Park 38, Kelly 8: Kenneth Wright had 11 carries for 265 yards and five touchdowns to lead Gage Park (1-5, 1-2) past Kelly (1-5, 0-4) in the Public League Blue West on Oct. 9. Wright scored a sixth TD on a kickoff return and also passed for 50 yards.

On defense, Wright had three tackles, including one for loss.

Phoenix 30, Kennedy 14: Phoenix snapped Kennedy’s seven-game winning streak to snap the season and forged a three-way tie for first place in the Public League White West on Oct. 9. Phoenix, Kennedy and Rauner all finished 4-1 in league play.

Kavarion McCarter ran a kickoff back 90 yards for a TD for the Crusaders, who are 7-1 overall. Alex Hernandez passed for 45 yards and a touchdown and Victor Sandoval had eight carries for 60 yards.
