Some very sad news and tragedy in our neighborhoods, I am sure most of us have heard, about CPD Officer Andrés Vásquez Lasso. The community has come together in prayers, vigils, walks and blue ribbons to honor him.
Congratulations to the girls’ volleyball team of Sts. Bruno and Richard School. They are the champions of the Hale Park President’s Day Volleyball tournament. Go Eagles!
The first graders of the Sts. Bruno and Richard love Dr. Seuss. They recently celebrated his birthday while wearing Cat in the Hat hats. His actual birthday is March 2 and is a nationwide reading celebration.
I’d like to point out some hints that were published in the Archer Heights Civic Association newsletter on avoiding con artists.
First of all, a con artist is someone, an artist at it, trying to gain your confidence. If someone poses as a utility worker, for example gas or electric asking for entry into your home, be leery. None of the utilities are going to send an unannounced representative to your door for any reason. Utilities and city agencies will contact you by written letter or email, stating the time and date of their visit.
If a random contractor shows up at your door, get a business card and check their legitimacy first with the Better Business Bureau and ask for a list of contactable references. If you agree to a project, get a signed contract specifying the work to be done, time schedule and payment terms. Don’t take anybody to your bank to withdraw funds. Children of Archer Heights, age 12 and under will have something to get excited about. The Archer Heights Civic Association will be holding their annual Easter egg hunt in Archer Park on Saturday, April 8.

The Chicago Working Families’ Archer Avenue St. Patrick’s Day Parade is Saturday, March 11, stepping off at noon from Archer and Oak Park.
Time changes this weekend to Daylight Savings Time, so spring ahead. In just one week we will be able to drink some green beer!
The Garfield Ridge Satellite Senior Center, 5674-B S. Archer, will be having a St. Patrick’s Day Bingo Party from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Friday, March 17 The cost is $5 and includes, coffee and a treat, along with bingo. Tickets must be purchased in advance. None will be sold at the door. Starting at 11:30 a.m., a corned beef luncheon will be served for a donation of $2. This luncheon requires signing up for as well.
