Hundreds of Chicago residents got one-on-one help filing property tax appeals at two 23rd Ward workshops ahead of the Oct. 29 deadline for Lake Township.
Representatives from the Cook County Assessor’s Office met with residents Oct. 19 and Oct. 20 at Ald. Silvana Tabares (23rd) ward offices in Garfield Ridge and West Lawn. The Assessor’s office answered questions and helped residents file property tax appeals on the spot, according to Tabares.
According to their website, the Cook County Assessor’s Office is a government agency committed to providing a transparent evaluation of both residential and commercial properties, ensuring it is conducted in accordance with the law.
Tabares said her staff has kept helping residents who could not make it to the workshops.
“Staff members from my office have been actively assisting residents who were unable to attend the event. As a reminder, the deadline for submissions is Oct. 29, and we remain committed to providing support to residents seeking to apply,” Tabares said.
Residents can also file or refile appeals through the assessor’s office. Those who missed exemption savings for 2025 can also apply for a Certificate of Error.
Exemptions lower a homeowner’s property tax bill, according to the assessor’s office. The most common, the Homeowner Exemption, “saves a Cook County property owner an average of approximately $950” a year, the office said.
