Liam Garr has always looked up to superheroes. Now, the sixth grader from Bradley has a chance to become one himself through a competition that could put him at the center of his own comic book while providing financial relief for his family.

His mother, Amber Garr, hopes the community will support Liam as he competes in Super Kids, a contest organized by the Stan Lee Reading Foundation.

“He’s always been my little superhero,” Amber said.

Liam’s love of superheroes goes beyond their costumes and extraordinary abilities. He admires what they represent, including strength, courage and the ability to overcome challenges.

The sixth grader has faced plenty of challenges of his own. Liam has muscular dystrophy and has used a wheelchair since he was 4 years old. Before that, he relied on strollers. Despite the physical challenges he has faced, his mother said he has continued working hard, particularly toward one goal that has always been important to him: walking.

Liam recently underwent major back surgery. His doctor told him the titanium rods placed in his back were comparable to the vibranium used in superhero gear, giving the young superhero fan a special way to relate his medical journey to the characters he admires.

Amber describes her son as a bright, quick-witted boy with a big heart and a personality that draws people in.

“He has a heart of gold,” she said. “He’s so smart and has advanced emotional intelligence for his age. He’s super witty and sarcastic at times. He’s the kind of kid that lights up the room.”

Through the Super Kids competition, Liam has the opportunity to become the main character in a limited-edition comic book. The prize package also includes four VIP tickets to LA Comic Con and $25,000.

The potential financial award would mean more than a prize to Liam and his family. Amber said the money could help repair the family’s handicap-accessible van and potentially pay off the remaining loan.

Reliable accessible transportation is important to helping Liam get where he needs to go. The award could ease some of the financial pressures that come with caring for a child with physical challenges.

The competition ends Nov. 19, with winners expected to be announced around Dec. 19. Amber hopes the community will rally behind her son and help him reach the next stage of the contest.

“Liam has spent much of his life working through challenges while holding on to the superheroes he has always admired. Becoming the star of his own comic book would give him a chance to see himself as the hero of a story, too,” Amber said.

With his determination, quick wit and big heart, Liam embodies many of the qualities his favorite superheroes represent. The Super Kids competition offers him a chance to share his story with a wider audience while giving his family hope for some much-needed financial assistance.
