School District 104 Superintendent Dr. David Negron said the district’s annual Back-to-School Bash “went very well,” drawing about 1,200 families to Argo High School on Saturday, Aug. 22.
The event was rescheduled from the previous week at SD104’s Heritage Middle School due to heavy rain. Argo High School stepped in to host, allowing the district to hold the event despite the weather delay.
“Come rain or shine, we were able to hold the event,” Negron said. “Fortunately the weather cooperated, so the food outside was still able to work for us.”
Families received free backpacks, school supplies, books, and food to prepare for the school year, which had just begun. State Senator Mike Porfirio, Summit Mayor Sergio Rodriguez, village trustees, and school staff distributed backpacks and supplies.
The SD104 Folkloric Dancers performed in their colorful costumes, drawing cheers from the crowd. The group is a popular draw at district events.
The event also featured a DJ, face painting, and bounce houses.
Thirty vendors — including local elected officials and businesses — donated school supplies, and seven food vendors provided meals.
The event has grown significantly since its inception under Negron’s predecessor. The first two years were held at Heritage Middle School. Argo’s fieldhouse proved large enough to accommodate the growing crowd, and Negron said he hopes to partner with the school again next year.
“Hopefully next year we could tag team with Argo and make it even bigger and make it a whole community event between both our school districts,” he said.
