A week after it opened for the season, Orland Park’s Centennial Park Aquatic Center was closed to the public Saturday because two recent cases of Escherichia coli (E. coli) infection were linked to the facility.
The pool was to remain closed Sunday and Monday while staff conducted additional water sampling and reviewed site conditions.
Officials said the confirmed illnesses prompted the precautionary closure.
E. coli are bacteria found in the intestines of humans and warm-blooded animals and are often found in recreational waters. Most strains of E. coli are harmless, but some can cause mild to severe illness. Higher bacterial levels increase the risk of infection. Elevated counts can follow heavy rainfall, swimmer contamination, or wildlife waste entering the water.
If you recently swam at Centennial Park Aquatic Center in Orland Park, monitor for symptoms of E. coli infection and contact your healthcare provider if you become ill. Common symptoms include:
• Diarrhea
• Stomach cramping, pain, or tenderness
• Nausea and vomiting
• Fever
If symptoms are severe, persistent, or worsening, seek immediate medical attention.
