Greetings to all! I want to thank everyone who called me last week with opinions and concerns and news to share. I got a few calls about the property at Southwest Highway and Cicero.

I originally reported that a Paisans Pizzeria restaurant is planned for that large corner space. I got the information from a spokesperson for Paisans. It turns out that a new Paisans is not planned for that space after all because there is an existing one not too far from that location. I did find out that Chase Bank bought the property for almost 3 million dollars and that a new Chase Bank branch will be built.

I also asked about the Paisans restaurant planned for the corner of Archer and Cicero. I was told that construction is to begin soon. I don’t know why there has been such a lengthy delay. If you recall, the Paisans on Pulaski and 64th took years to complete due to problems with non-union labor and contracts. We will have to wait and see what happens.

I was hoping for something a little more exciting at the former Jedi’s Garden location. I suppose another Chase Bank is better than nothing. Wouldn’t it be nice if the bank would celebrate their grand opening by giving out free samples?

Cafe 63 closes after a decade

I received a number of calls about Cafe 63 restaurant at 6411 W. 63rd Street. The restaurant closed its doors after 10 years of serving delicious, homestyle cooking. The owners Dale and Donna Andrews got to know their customers by name. Many people told me how much they miss going to Cafe 63. It was a place to gather. One person said “Cafe 63 provided food for the soul.”

I extend condolences to the Andrews family as they mourn the death of Dale. May his memory be a blessing.

History buffs and reader feedback

Many people called me last week because I had mentioned the May 8, 1884, birthday of Harry Truman. Everyone enjoyed talking about our 33rd president. I shared my original writing with the callers as some of it had been omitted from my column. I must say, there are a lot of history buffs in our neighborhood! I learned a lot from all the conversations. Thank you everyone for the information.

I got a very sweet call from a lady who wanted a recommendation for a neighborhood handyman.

Jacky’s Hotdogs: Still a neighborhood fave

One caller wanted to let me know that long time neighborhood fast food place Jacky’s Hotdogs still has great food at low prices compared to other restaurants in the neighborhood. I agree. Hubby and I went there a few days ago on our way home from visiting a friend in the hospital. We got there after 9 p.m. and the “joint was jumping.” I must say, the food is pretty darn good! I was going to say pretty damn good but I wasn’t sure if I should use a swear word in my column.

I got a cheeseburger, which I feel is the true test of a good fast food place. They didn’t skimp on cheese and the burger was served on a sesame seed bun. Jacky’s has hotdogs, chicken, steak sandwiches, sides, and special deals on combination meals. Best of all – they are open till 1 a.m. Jacky’s is located at 5415 S. Pulaski. Call them at 773-767-7676.
