Mary Ann Cartwright, a Chicago native who overcame early hardship to become a nurse, beloved baker and devoted volunteer at Gottlieb Hospital, died April 29, 2026. She was 93.
Mrs. Cartwright was born August 20, 1932, in Chicago, the daughter of the late Josephine Cairo and Edward Cairo. She was raised by her stepmother, the late Elvera Lavorato.
Despite losing her mother at age 3, she built a life marked by kindness, generosity and service. At 44, she completed the Nursing Curriculum at Triton College, a meaningful accomplishment that reflected her desire to care for others. She worked as a nurse and waitress, roles that suited her compassionate nature.
She was known throughout her community for her cooking and baking, and for her willingness to help others. She volunteered at Gottlieb Hospital for several years and was a regular in a monthly Pinochle club, where she enjoyed fellowship with friends.
She married Thomas L. Cartwright, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Cartwright is survived by four children: Cheryl Hardt, Anna Marie Wallace, Loriann Cartwright and John Cartwright. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and three siblings: Patricia DePasquale, Christyne Vranes and the late Francyne Palladino.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two sons, Thomas S. Cartwright and Phillip Doherty.
A visitation will be held Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Damar-Kaminski Funeral Home & Crematorium, 7861 South 88th Avenue, Justice, Illinois. A service and time of remembrance will be held at 6:30 p.m.
Cremation rites will be accorded.
