More than 1,000 cyclists are expected to participate in the Orland Park Police Department’s annual Special Olympics Bike Ride. The popular event begins at 8 a.m. on Sunday, August 24, outside Fattie’s Pub, 14420 John Humphrey Drive.

The 14-mile leisurely ride will take participants ages 12 and older through some of the village’s most scenic trails before finishing at Fattie’s where breakfast will be served for all participants. A water break will be provided at the midway point of the ride.

Over the last two decades, the ride has morphed from a simple fundraiser to a significant community event that fosters connection and community pride within Orland Park.

According to Police Chief Eric Rossi, the event has become a “community favorite.”

“People mark their calendars for this event each summer,” he said.

Longtime Orland Park resident Steve Neuhaus said  he will be riding in memory of his longtime friend and retired Orland Park Police Lt. Bob Soukup, who was active with the Special Olympics. He died three years ago.

“Bob was a great friend and I really miss him,” said Neuhaus, who bought himself a brand new Huffy mountain bike just for this event. “This will be my second bike ride in 20 years. I’m excited.

“I’ve had a good life. I’ve been blessed,” he said. “Every morning, I wake up and ask God, ‘What do you want me to do?’ This is something I want to do.”

Registration to ride is $30 per rider. All participants must register online by Friday, August 22, at 5 p.m.
