Palos Heights handed out awards last week recognizing the services provided by volunteers through the years.

The proclamations, which were read aloud during the city council meeting April 16, were a testament to the city’s volunteers and were handed out as part of Volunteer Recognition Week.

Volunteers were cited for their efforts at school functions, for helping plan city functions, and cleaning and planting at local parks.

The volunteers honored were selected based on their considerable services, dedication, impact, and commitment to the community.

“This town owes a great deal to our volunteers,” said Mayor Bob Straz. “We’re eager to add three more individuals to our esteemed Volunteer wall of honor.”

The wall of honor, located at the front entrance to Palos Heights City Hall, not only stands as a testament to the critical role of volunteers in the city’s functioning but also serves as a constant reminder of their invaluable contributions.

This year, Palos Heights cited volunteers Bob Grossart, Lois Duran, and Susan Snow for their dedication and services.

Lois Duran, who was present to accept her award, was recognized for her work volunteering at The Children’s Farm at the Center for many years, her countless hours of service with tours, and her role as an active member of the Beatification Ceremony.

Straz also said she was a “fixture” as a volunteer at Lake Katherine.

In other action, Alderman Jeffery Key asked to approve a bid by Williams Architects for the upcoming phase one of Palos pool improvements, which was approved.

Construction was approved for $72,960 worth of work at Orchard Park.
