March comes in like a lamb – it goes out like a lion! A sneak peek at the weather forecast for the next 10 days does show some mild days. So, we welcome March and Daylight Savings Time in the early morning of March 10. As we leave Black History Month, we now enter Women’s History Month.
This time of year, also brings back not so distant memories of St. Joseph and St. Patrick’s tables at our local parishes. For years we visited St. Bruno’s table for delicious foods. St. Turibius also had an excellent buffet. I guess those days are gone.
The Polish community of St. Richard is hosting the Lenten dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 1. You can enjoy a fried fish dinner for $14 or a pierogi dinner for $12. Dinner is served at the St. Richard Church hall, 50th and Kostner.

Always around this time of year, Girl Scout cookies begin to appear. Please support the Scouts by purchasing some delicious delights. The girls from St. Symphorosa Troop 26186 will be out and about Garfield Ridge along Archer this weekend. They will be at Shop N Save on March 2 and Adam Furniture on March 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. I loved my days as a Girl Scout with St. Turibius and our troop leader, Mrs. M. Such good times were had preparing crafts, earning badges and going camping.
A few weeks ago, someone drove through the little memorial park along near Archer and Tripp, leaving behind car debris and some damage. The little strip of land was dedicated—many years ago–to the military men and women of this country who served to protect the rest of us from Nazis, Communists and others who would have enslaved us. It was created and then maintained through the efforts of the men and women of the Pfc Ted Stempien VFW Post 8821 and its Auxiliary, which for years has been headquartered at 5104 S. Archer.
Through the efforts of 23rd Ward Ald. Silvana Tabares’ Office, the debris was cleaned up.
Happy Birthday wishes for this week go out to Susan Tenczar, Joan Smigielski and Maria Zubek.
And as a reminder, this Saturday, March 2nd at noon is the honorary street sign dedication for Officer Andres Vasquez Lasso. The dedication will be held at Marquette and Lawndale at noon.
