I hope everyone had a nice Valentine’s Day. The weather sure was nice. As my hubby and I drove around the neighborhood that day, we saw a lot of holiday merchandise for sale outside at street corners and storefronts. I saw pink teddy bears, red roses and heart-shaped balloons tied with ribbons.
Later we went out for dinner and even though we were out late, on our way home we still saw lots of outdoor displays of Valentine gifts for all the Johnny-come-latelys and last-minute Charlies. Love is in the air, no matter what time it is.
Going out for a special occasion often means a trip to the barbershop. We sure have a lot of them in West Lawn. My son, Joe, recommends Barber Life, 3820 W. 63rd St. His barber always does a great job. I told Joe he looked very handsome after his latest hair cut. Joe said, “Yay! My mom said I look handsome!”
I admit I would probably say he is handsome even if he didn’t get a haircut. Barber Life is open Monday through Saturday until 8 p.m. You can call for an appointment at (773) 657-1130, but walk-ins are welcome.

St. Nicholas of Tolentine School is hosting their annual Spring Fling Scholarship Dinner Dance on Saturday, March 9. All proceeds will benefit their scholarship programs. Los Youth Center, 3919 W. 63rd St., has applications for apprenticeships at the Field Museum and the Chicago After School Matters Program in art and digital media for teens ages 13 through 19. Teens can visit Los Youth in person for help in applying for the apprenticeships or call (773) 424-5294 for additional information.
West Lawn Little League is now taking registrations for their 2024 baseball season on Saturday, Feb. 24, as well as some days in March. Call John Godinez at (773) 370-2349 for exact dates and times. Registration is held at West Lawn Park, 4233 W. 65th St. The baseball games are played at the field, 4546 W. 64th St.
Envision Community Services, 4324 W. 63rd St., is giving away various free items to anyone living in the 60629 ZIP code. I wasn’t able to find out exactly what the items are. I do know that Envision provides many services to our neighborhood. They are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 5 p.m. Appointments are required. Call 1-872-242-8582.
The next CAPS Beat 813/833 will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27 at West Lawn Park.
Thank you, one and all, for the Valentine wishes and texts!
