All kids ages 3 to 15 years old are invited to make their own robot on Monday, Feb. 26 at 6 to 7 p.m. This educational experience will take place at the Archer Heights Branch Library, 5055 S. Archer. Children will use basic craft items to build a gravity-powered robot that can walk on its own. How exciting! I know a child who would love this. I will let you know how it goes. Call the library at (312) 747-9241 for more information.

All high school students who live in the Chicago Lawn (8th) Police District are invited to attend a teen forum hosted by the Eighth District Police Council. The forum will take place at Kennedy High School, 6325 W. 56th St., on Saturday, Feb. 10 from 10 a.m. to noon. The forum will provide an opportunity for teens to participate in a discussion about policing and youth. Call the Eighth District Police for more information at (312) 747-8730.

I got a lot of phone calls and texts last month regarding gunshots heard near 61st and Central Park on Dec. 9. I heard them too, because I am a block away from that corner. I didn’t have a lot of information for the callers. Many of us did call the police when we heard the shots. I found out that our neighbor, Johnny Huizar, was shot in the face as he was walking home from his job at Midway Airport. He somehow managed to walk home after being shot, but he later died. Recently, the suspected shooter was arrested. My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Johnny Huizar.

I also extend condolences to the family and many friends of George Hresil on his recent passing. George was a longtime resident of West Lawn and for many years, my neighbor two doors down. George was a father and grandfather. My deepest sympathy to the entire Hresil family.
