Did you make any New Year’s resolutions? The most popular ones seem to do with food. I would never vow to diet or give up any kind of food. This would be a recipe for disaster because I just love to cook, eat and dine out. No sense setting myself up for failure.

I decided to give up horseback riding. So far I’ve enjoyed perfect success. I admit I haven’t gotten on a horse for more than 50 years, but that’s beside the point.

Speaking of food, famous American chef and cookbook author Paula Deen has a birthday today, Jan. 19. I have one of her cookbooks. I think I gained weight just reading her delightfully decadent book! I remember seeing her on a talk show and she said, “Yar whatcha eat.” I must be a large pizza with mushrooms.

I mentioned several pizza places in West Lawn in my column last week. I thought I included all of them, but a friend called and told me he likes Monica’s Pizza, 6448 S. Pulaski. He lives right around the corner from Monica’s, which he said has been there for many years. I haven’t gotten around to trying their pizza. I must do that as soon as I can. Their phone number is (773) 735-8160.

I was shopping recently at Tony’s Fresh Market, 7770 S. Cicero, Burbank. I must say, Tony’s has the most impressive produce department. I saw every kind of fruit and vegetables imaginable. All were beautifully displayed. I found out that Tony’s is hiring. Call for more information at (708) 733-7337.

St. Mary Star of the Sea is having a fundraiser show at Duggan Hall, 6424 S. Kenneth, on Saturday, Jan. 20. The proceeds will benefit their sports association. Enjoy a night of comedy for those 21 and older with some of Chicago’s top comedians: Joey Villagomez, Alicia Molina, Jaime DeLeon and Patti Vasquez, plus music by DJ Dynamico. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the show begins at 8. There will be tacos for purchase and a cash bar. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Visit the rectory, 6435 S. Kilbourn, to purchase tickets in advance.

Save the date: on Feb. 9 and 10 St. Mary’s will have their annual Casino Nights at the school. The evening starts at 6 p.m. and goes to midnight on both nights. There will be raffles, blackjack, roulette, craps, Texas Hold ’em, a money wheel and more. Must be 21or older to attend.

The Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture, 6500 S.
