Team Palestine’s Palestine Children’s Relief Fund invited women to join a Women’s Self-Defense Seminar on Jan. 7 at the UFC Gym Orland Park.

The event presented a theme: “Join us in our efforts to support the people of Gaza while empowering ourselves.”

The crowds formed as women gathered at the UFC Gym with smiles, positive attitudes, and excitement. A registration fee of $25 offered a two-hour self-defense seminar presented by UFC champ Belal Muhammad, MMA Fighters Kevin Nowacyzk and Alberto Rodriguez, martial artist Valarie Sanchez, and UFC pioneer Louis Taylor. Participating women had the chance to learn proper techniques and other instructional exercises. All proceeds from the event go towards PCRF’s Gaza Relief efforts.

regional 1 9 24 ufc4PCRF, a nonprofit organization, annually provides medical and humanitarian relief care to thousands of injured and unwell children who lack medical care. The organization’s efforts have helped build two pediatric cancer departments in Palestine and has acclimated 6,398 beneficiaries since 2022.

General Manager Beejay Haddad did not hesitate to help host the event, “We’ve hosted plenty of women seminars to encourage an empowering mindset, and helping Belal and his crew with space for such a pressing cause like Gaza. Any way we can be involved, we want to be involved.”

PCRF’s social media executive, Josselyn Sorto, hopes the empowering session will further harbor unity as a community.

“I believe all these women here today display our power to some capacity,” Sorto said. “While we can’t actively go and assist Gaza, it brings us all together as a community.”

“Having one common goal of raising funds while also enjoying an impactful activity, calls hope for us all, (and) empowering ourselves revives hope, and when we see all women come together unionized is powerful.”

Assistant Dean Nina Shoman-Dajani, of Moraine Valley Community College, was among the many who participated in the self-defense course.

“It is always great to support PCRF and be part of the community, speaking out in various ways against the Genocide happening in Gaza,” Shoman-Dajani said. “We all have a role, and it isn’t just for Arab/Palestinian communities to change the long historical narrative against the Palestinian cause.”

In addition to the self-defense seminar, the PCRF participates in marathons and races yearly. Amyra Muhammad (PharmD) has been an active organization member since 2016. She spotlights the organization’s humanitarian efforts.

“We wanted to create ways to help community members who seek to help amplify Gaza while establishing a safe place for them,” Muhammad said. “The turnout has been incredible, and we want to be able to hold more seminars; events like today help us be the voice for Gaza.”

Registered participants MaryBeth Casarez and Tina Nunez joined the seminar to continue voicing support for Gaza.

Nunez said, “I want to do my part in supporting Gaza; there’s only so much we can do here (in the States). Attending classes like these that donate all funds to Gaza is one way I can illustrate my support.”

Casarez plans to attend as many Palestinian events as possible to show her support. “My best friend is Palestinian, and we run together. and it made me interested in attending and showing my support. This is my second event, and it won’t be my last.”

I hear so much about how the Israelis allegedly oppressed the Palestinians and people are chanting for the end of the “occupation.” First, Israel did not occupy Gaza since 2005. For the sake of peace, they left Gaza in good faith. Second, Jews were in Israel over 2000 years ago before the Romans exiled them from their own land and Europe kept them from returning. Arabs have been in Israel since the rise of Islam–about 1400 years by loose estimate. With the Romans and Franks, they were conquerors. Under the Ottomans for hundreds of years, they were settlers that had nothing to do with the conquests. Face it: Both Jews and Arabs belong in the lands of Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank. Even so, when the British let Jews come in large numbers, Amin al-Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, extended the olive branch to Hitler, who eagerly accepted it. After World War II and the Holocaust, Jews came to the Holy Land anyway they could. In 1947, the UN acknowledged that there should be a two-party state: Israel and Palestine. They then made proposals on how to split the land between them. The Jews, who just wanted peace, accepted every UN proposal, and so did the British. It was the PALESTINIANS who rejected every proposal–even one where they would get 75% of the land. When the boundaries were decided and Israel became a nation, the PALESTINIANS, along with other Arab nations, declared war. In fact, in each war Israel has had in the Middle East, it is local nations and terrorist groups beginning the provocations. Remember that. Third, it seems as if these pro-Palestinian activists have forgotten or simply do not care that Hamas, the governing body of Gaza (even though they are terrorists) killed entire families, including an elderly Holocaust survivor. They beheaded babies, raped women and girls, and kidnapped hundreds of Israelis–even babies. It is true that Israel has made some mistakes and has mistreated Palestinians, including allowing those Jewish settlements on Palestinian land. Still, Israel ejected those settlers out of Palestine. Besides, when did the IDF kill entire families execution style? When did they behead babies? When did they capture women to rape and then kill? Now, for every protect for Israel, there are protests for Palestine that are anything but peaceful. When a Palestinian man when to Israeli protestors and danced in front of them waving a Palestinian flag, they just looked at him At universities, Jews are not even allowed to counter-protest even though their protests so far have been civil and peaceful. Palestinians in America have been threatened, the Bridgeview Mosque and Islamic school have been treatened, and that poor Palestinian child was murdered, and his mother was stabbed. Still, what about Jews being threatened and beaten, synagogues have been threatened, and a synagogue president in Detroit was murdered. Where is your outrage with that? At least pro-Israel protestors are not shouting “Death to Palestine” and burning Palestinian flags. Pro-Palestine protests are not complete without the burning of Israeli flags, shouting “Death to Israel,” and then spouting other antisemitic gestures. These protestors do not seem to understand that Hamas is a terrorist organization that uses their own people as human shields and have no honor. Their leaders and not even in Gaza! They have been found vacationing in other Middle Eastern countries whild all this is going on. If the Palestinians cannot do better than Hamas for leadership, their men deserve everything Israel throws at them. Except for the Israelis murdered and uprooted, the only victims here are the Palestinian women, who have no rights, and their children. As for the ceasefire, tell Hamas to put down their weapons first and to surrender for the sake of their people.
