Today (Dec. 1) is National Eat a Red Apple Day. Apples are a superfood. Eating them will reduce your chance of developing diabetes, heart disease and cancer. They are good for digestion and even improve brain health. Organic apples are better than non-organic ones because they are not sprayed with insecticides.
I ate a lot of apples on Thanksgiving last week, in the form of an apple pie. This is not the healthiest way to eat them, but it is the most enjoyable. If you can come up with a more delightful way to eat apples, I’d sure like to hear about it.
Jumping from Thanksgiving to Christmas, I see my neighbors in West Lawn have taken down their lit-up plastic turkey lawn decorations and put up dazzling Christmas lights, Santas, reindeer, baby Jesus mangers and plastic snowmen. It truly is Christmas.
If you happen to be walking or driving near 59th and Pulaski, you should check out a giant mural painted on the side of a house at 3932 W. 59th St. It has nothing to do with December holidays. You can see it all year. The mural has shapes, people and animals painted in muted colors of gray and blue, with touches of white and black and brown. There is a face with big eyes at the top of the mural that seem to be watching over the area.
If you are at Midway Airport near the Battle of Midway exhibit, look for West Lawn’s very own Christmas tree. It is simply lovely. Talented volunteers from the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture decorated the tree.
Top View Restaurant, 4715 W. 63rd St., is within easy walking distance from Midway. Hubby and I went there recently and enjoyed a delicious brunch. Did you know that Top View has been a family-owned restaurant since 2006? Their fresh, updated menu features every kind of omelettes, pancakes, waffles, sandwiches, soups, burgers, Mexican specialities, steaks and salads. They bake their own bread, too. The staff is super friendly.
Top View is currently interviewing prospective breakfast cooks. Call (773) 581-1770 for more information. I asked the cashier what their hours are and she laughed and said, “It seems like we are always open!” Top View is open 365 days a year from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.
St. Mary Star of the Sea Church is pairing up with the Save-A-Lot grocery store at 4439 W. 63rd St. and having their annual food donation event called Give A Little, Help A Lot. When you shop at Save-A-Lot, you can purchase a pre-filled bag of food for $5 and then leave the bag at the store. St. Mary Star of the Sea volunteers will take the bags of groceries to the food bank St. Turibius Church in the West Elsdon neighborhood. The bags of food will be given to needy people in our community. Save-A-Lot grocery store is open every day until 9 p.m.
