At its Monday, October 16, meeting, the Kankakee City Council gave their required approval to a plan originally put forward by the Kankakee County Historical Commission and given preliminary approval by the Kankakee County Board.
It would designate a trolley car that was in service in Kankakee from 1917 to 1932 as an historical landmark. City approval was required for the designation, because it is located on city land. Mayor Chris Curtis said the trolley car is open during the hours of operation of the Kankakee Train Depot for tours right now and is located immediately north of the depot.
Curtis said the historical landmark designation would open up the possibility for grants to renovate the car and for improvements to the site where it is located.  The proposal now will go back to the Kankakee County Board for final approval.
