Pair charged in Summit bar burglary
By Bob Bong
A Chicago man and a juvenile have been charged with burglary for breaking into a bar in Summit on October 10.
Jailen Loggins, 19, of the 7900 block of South Woodlawn Avenue, and a 15-year-old male juvenile were charged with burglary of the Exit Saloon in the 6300 block of South Harlem Avenue.
The same duo was also charged by Oak Lawn and Evergreen Park police with bar burglaries in their towns the same day although he was identified as Jarlen Loggins.
Summit police said they were able to obtain video footage of the Exit Saloon burglary and learned the suspects were the same as the ones arrested by Evergreen Park police for a bar burglary in that village the same morning.
According to Evergreen Park police, the two suspects provided voluntary statements admitting their involvement in the burglaries in both Oak Lawn and Evergreen Park.
At 6:30 a.m. on October 10, Oak Lawn police responded to a call of a suspicious vehicle parked near West 95th Street and South 55th Avenue, according to reports.
Officers located an unoccupied and running black Hyundai Elantra parked in the alley behind a business in the 5400 block of West 95th Street. The vehicle’s steering column was peeled and a milk crate containing several bottles of alcohol was located on the ground near the vehicle.
Responding officers were aware of a burglary that occurred at a bar in neighboring Evergreen Park moments before discovering the vehicle. They proceeded to conduct a premises check at BJ McMahon’s Bar and Grill, 5432 W. 95th St., Oak Lawn, and discovered the glass front door of the establishment was shattered, according to police.
Officers entered the empty bar and contacted the owner. Together they discovered that $150 was taken from the cash register. Attempts were made to force open a safe and the video games inside, police said.
A hammer and a mask believed to have been used by the offenders were also recovered, according to police.
While officers were investigating the scene, Oak Lawn’s 911 dispatch center began receiving calls of suspicious males running through yards in the 9500 block of West Shore Drive.
Responding officers located two males at a bus stop near 95th Street and Parkside Avenue who matched the description provided. Utilizing video footage found in the area, officers were able to identify the two suspects trespassing on residential properties between the 9500 block of West Shore Drive and the 9700 block of South Central Avenue.
Police said they determined that the black Hyundai Elantra involved in the Evergreen Park burglary had been stolen in the 6100 block of Newgard Avenue in Chicago, according to police.
Summit police said they were still looking for additional suspects in the Exit Saloon break-in.
