Hello neighbors! This is a busy time of year as we start thinking about the upcoming holidays, do some fall gardening, weatherize our homes, look for our jackets and sweaters, and most importantly, find hiding places for the Halloween candy we buy so it will last until Halloween.
Aside from hiding Halloween candy, judging by my phone calls from readers the number one thing on our minds continues to be crime. Here’s something we can do about it: attend the Chicago Lawn (8th) District Police’s “Community Conversation” at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23 at West Lawn Park, 4233 W. 65th St. All are invited to help create a 2024 strategic plan for the district. Registration is required. Call (312) 747-8724. I hope to see you there.

During the past week I continued to get calls and texts from readers with more suggestions for the empty Kmart building at 71st and Pulaski. The overwhelming majority of callers, like last week, want a grocery store. However, I thought I’d share a unique suggestion from my lovely future daughter-in-law, Ellie. She suggested an indoor water park. Last week she suggested an IKEA store. Thank you, Ellie. I love both of your suggestions. Other new and exciting suggestions from readers are a gymnastic school, a roller rink and a skate boarding facility.
The Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture, 6500 S. Pulaski, is pleased to announce its first annual Holiday Craft Bazaar on Sunday, Nov. 19 from noon to 4 p.m. This event promises to be a great afternoon of holiday crafts, gifts, food and entertainment. It will take place in the museum’s beautiful Amber Room. Vendors and crafters who would like to rent a table please send an email to Rob Martin at rob.martin.frre@gmail.com.
The West Lawn Branch Library, 4020 W. 63rd St., will be hosting a WTTW Kids Play and Learn event on Friday, Oct. 20 from 11 a.m. to noon. Kids ages 3 to 5 years old with a parent or adult are invited to learn and play with your favorite Sesame Street characters as they develop skills in language and literacy. Registration is required. Call the children’s librarian at (312) 747-7381.
