Nearly 30 people gathered Monday morning at the Summit Fire Department on 59th Street to remember the people who died in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks carried out by al-Qaeda against the United States.
The ceremony and prayer service were followed by Summit Fire Chief Anthony Anderson and Summit Police Chief Mel Ortiz placing a wreath by the flag pole outside of the fire station.
Also in attendance were Summit Mayor Sergio Rodriguez, Summit Village Administrator Jerry Hurckes, McCook Mayor Terry Carr, McCook Deputy Fire Chief Brendan Meskill, Summit and McCook firefighters, and village residents.
Summit first responders have annually commemorated the anniversary of the attacks against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. A fourth jet that was hijacked crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers attacked the hijackers.
The official death toll has been set at 2,977 people from all over the world who were killed in the attacks.
