A Lyons man brought to the village board his concerns about vehicles speeding down his normally quiet residential street.
Kyle Comstock, 32, of the 8000 block of White Avenue, told the board at its June 20 meeting that he worries about the safety of his 2-year-old son playing outdoors.
Motorists are speeding down White Avenue between Joliet and Lawndale avenues, Comstock said.
“I’ve noticed there’s a lot of people who speed down White Avenue. I think it is to cut through when there’s a red light on Joliet or Lawndale at Ogden.
“They’re going 40 miles per hour plus. I know your police have a lot of work to do and they can’t hang out on White Avenue all day. I think the best solution would be to put a couple of speed humps on White Avenue,” Comstock said.
Police Chief Thomas Herion is no fan of speed humps, noting that sometimes teen drivers use those to get their cars airborne, leading to other problems like crashing into parked vehicles.
However, Herion said he’ll instruct police officers to pay closer attention to speeders on White Avenue.
Comstock said his son is usually playing outdoors between noon and 4 p.m. But he’s also noticed speeders much earlier.
“I work at night. I’m laying my head on the pillow at 4 or 5 a.m. and I’ve heard cars rip through then. Obviously, my 2-year-old is not out then,” Comstock said.
After the meeting, Mayor Christopher Getty and Herion met with Comstock to discuss the problem.
Asked for his thoughts about more motorists speeding, Herion did not hold back.
“Nobody cares. They just feel they can do whatever they want to do. It’s unbelievable. It’s amazing,” Herion said.
