Happy May to all. The month of May was named for the Roman goddess Maia, who oversaw the growth of plants. We can see that growth all around us as we walk through our neighborhood or just look out our windows. May the month of May be a time of healthy, new growth for West Lawn and our city.
Would you like to walk through our neighborhood in the safety and company of others? Friend and neighbor Eddie Guillen has organized a walking club. All are invited to meet up at West Lawn Park, 4233 W. 65th St., every Monday through Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Eddie or a volunteer walking captain will guide everyone on a walk. What a nice way to meet new friends and get some exercise at the same time!
Astrrongu Southwest Youth Council, 3919 W. 63rd St., is hosting a “21 and older” fundraiser on Saturday, May 13 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The event is called Sip and Paint. Paint a picture as you enjoy tasting a selection of wines. Feel free to bring a friend. The cost is $40 per person. For more information, call (773) 424-5294 from noon to 8:30 p.m. weekdays.
St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 6435 S. Kilbourn, is having a rummage sale on Saturday, May 20 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the church parking lot. If you are interested in selling, the cost is $25 for two parking spaces. Boy Scout Troop 1441, sponsored by the St. Mary Star of the Sea Holy Name Society, will be sponsoring a spaghetti dinner on Sunday, May 7 in Duggan Hall at the church, from 1 to 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children under 12. This is a delicious way to support the Boy Scouts.
St. Mary’s will be holding a blood drive on Sunday, May 7 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There will be a blood drive bus located on Kilbourn, between 64th and 65th streets. Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome. Call 1-800-7TO-GIVE.
Make sure to eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of water before donating. All donors will be entered in a contest for a chance to win $1,000 in gift cards to a water park resort.
Envision Community Services will have their next Market Day on Saturday, May 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish Center, 4626 W. 63rd St. There will be more than 30 vendors selling homemade crafts, jewelry, baked goods and so much more. St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church, 3741 W. 62nd St., is having a Taco Night on Friday, May 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. Dinner includes three carne asada tacos, rice, beans and dessert. The cost is $15 at the door or $12 pre-sale. Call St. Nick’s at (773) 735-1121.
