I am happy to report that West Lawn Branch Library is open. A reader of my column called to ask me if our branch was going to be closed for remodeling. After checking the Chicago Public Library website, calling and talking with two different people and getting three different answers, I found out that our branch is open.
The Archer Heights Branch, 5055 S. Archer (312-747-9241), will be closed for remodeling during the months of April and May. Good news for West Lawn Branch users. For Archer Heights users, I was told you can pick up your books on hold at the Clearing Branch at 6423 W. 63rd Place (312-747-5657).

The West Lawn Branch, 4020 W. 63rd St., will have Yoga For Adults on Friday, April 7 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. This program is suitable for all skill levels. The library will present Baby Story Time on Wednesday, April 11 from 10:30 to 11 a.m. for newborns to two-year-olds. There will be stories, rhymes, songs and movement. Call to register for these events at 312-747-7381.
The Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture, 6500 S. Pulaski, will have a program on Saturday, April 15 at 2 p.m. by University of Illinois Professor Giedrius Subacius. He will speak about the life and work of Lithuanian historian Simonas Daukantas. Professor Subacius is the author of the book The Orthography of St. Petersburg.
On Sunday, April 16, Professor Subacius will lead a tour of Chicago abattoirs (slaughterhouses) where many Polish and Lithuanian immigrants worked, as told about in Upton Sinclair’s book The Jungle. Call for more information at 773-582-6500 or send an email to info@balzekasmuseum.org.
Daley College, 7500 S. Pulaski, will present a job fair on Wednesday, April 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There are job opportunities available in manufacturing, technology, transportation, criminal justice and business. Call for more information at 773-COLLEGE or visit ccc.edu.
Lawn Lanes, 6750 S. Pulaski, has spring and summer leagues and open bowling. They also have a fun selection of merchandise available through their website. From now until April 29, all proceeds from their sales will go to benefit the Youth Grand Prix Scholarship Program–the largest scholarship program in any sport (not just bowling) in Illinois. Lawn Lanes has hats, sweats, shirts, backpacks and more for sale. Call for more information at 773-582-2525 or go to lawnlanes.itemorder.com.
Blessings to all on Good Friday, Easter and Passover.
