Worth FOP seeks sponsors, volunteers for Polar Plunge

The Worth Fraternal Order of Police is asking the community to take a dip in cold waters for a good cause. 

The annual Worth FOP Polar Plunge will be held under the pavilion at Altman Park near 117th and Harlem on Saturday, March 4. The FOP is looking for sponsors for the event, which will begin about 11 a.m. 

“Teachers are also going to take part in the plunge, along with students and anyone that is interested,” said Police Chief Tim Denton during the Worth Village Board meeting on Tuesday night. 

Police officers, community leaders and students will take part in the event. The officers and other volunteers will be jumping into a swimming pool that will be set up specially for the event. Funds raised for the event will go to charities.

The Worth FOP also held the eighth annual pancake breakfast earlier this month. The event was well attended and the breakfast and bake sale raised a lot of revenue. 

The FOP presented a check for $1,800 for the South West Special Recreation Association. Police Sgt. Mike Cozzi presented the check to Nicolette Lahman, the organization’s executive director, and Dawn Kehoe, the business manager. 

SWSRA was formed in 1981 to provide year-round recreation programs and services for individuals with disabilities or special needs. SWSRA is affiliated with numerous southwest suburban parks, including the Worth Park District. 

Worth police made 27 criminal arrests last month, said Trustee Pete Kats, who is the head of the public safety committee. 

“The police were busy last month,” Kats said. “Keep up the good work.” 

Trustee Brad Urban, who is the head of the public works committee, said there was one lone water main break last month. Bacteriological samples were taken at 10 locations last month and are IEPA compliant, Urban said. 

Urban also reminded the board and residents that Hometown Hero Banner applications are being taken through April 30. The banners will be displayed Memorial Day through Veterans Day, Urban said. The fee for each banner is $70. 

The board approved a request from David Schutt for an honorary street sign that will be named Schutt Farm Road at Ridgeland and Home avenues. Urban said the request by the relative was made because the family sold produce and farm goods at that corner many years ago. 

Fish fry dinners will be served from 4 to 9 p.m. each Friday from Feb. 24 through April 7 at the Edge Bar & Grill, 7205 W. 111th St., at the Water’s Edge Golf Course. 

Fish Fry Fridays will also be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Feb. 24 through April 7 at the Marrs-Meyer American Legion Post 991, 11001 S. Depot St. The fee is $16 for adults and $10 for children ages 12 and under. Children under the age of 3 can attend free. Carryouts are $17. 

The annual corned beef and cabbage dinner will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 11, at the Marrs-Meyer Post. The fee is $18 for adults and $10 for children under age 12. Children under age 3 can attend free. Carryouts are $19. 

The Marrs-Meyer American Legion Auxiliary will hold its annual “New to You” rummage sale. Members are asking for donations of items in good condition, including toys, games, kitchenware, small furniture, electronics (no tube TVs), small appliances, tools, home decor, holiday decor, books, DVDs, videos, and clean, undamaged clothing. 

Donations can be brought to the Marrs-Meyer Post from noon until closing on Monday, April 24, and Tuesday, April 25. The rummage sale will be held on Thursday, April 27, and Friday, April 28. 

A business license application request from owner Anthony Kavaliunas to add a gaming cafe to Roma Cafe, 6900 W. 111th St., was approved. Kavaliunas stated that he also plans to reopen the kitchen. 

Owner Monzer Mohd Qasem was granted a business license for Almarah LLC, which will be a retail store at 6659 W. 111th St. 

Trustee Laura Packwood, who is the head of the golf committee, mentioned that Orion has managed the Water’s Edge Golf Course for a year dating back to Feb. 1. She also said that gaming revenue had brought in $22,308.61.
