The Township of Lyons board was in a giving mood at its most recent meeting.
The board approved sponsorships and donations totaling $12,250.
The largest donation was $10,000.
It went to the Greater Chicago Food Depository which runs 12 monthly mobile food pantries in the township each year.
Supervisor Christopher Getty noted that the township has funded the food depository for many years to help run the food pantries.
“We’re still working out the particulars. There may be (pantries held) once a month at two locations,” Getty told the board.
Traditionally, St. Blase Church in Summit is one food pantry site and the second is the Hodgkins Police Department, Getty said.
“Justice formerly did it and we’re talking with the Village of Willow Springs about taking that over,” Getty said.
The other sponsorships or donations were:
- $500 to St. Cletus Parish in La Grange for its St. Cletus Fall Fest that’s set for Sept. 5 to 8 in the parking lot at 600 W. 55th St.
- $750 to the village of Justice for its annual car show set for 2 to 11 p.m. at Commissioners Park.
- $1,000 to Willow Springs for its 2024 Willow Fest set for Aug. 8 to 11 near the village hall.
In other business, David Jelonek of G.W. & Associates, based in Hillside, gave a glowing review of the township after his annual audit of its finances and savings.
“Our audit is only as good as the people being audited. Your audit is done very quickly every year,” he said.
A resident told the board that he’s seen drag racing “since the schools let out,” on 87th Street from 91st Street to Wolf Road.
Most of the racing is in the afternoon and at night until around 10 p.m., he said. The information will be passed along to the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Department, which patrols unincorporated areas of the township, Getty said.
