Harbor House is excited to announce the opening of a second Domestic Violence Emergency Shelter, which is in Iroquois County. In addition to the Emergency Shelter in Kankakee County, this facility will serve as a resource in Harbor House’s mission to empower individuals, families, and communities through domestic violence programs, advocacy, and prevention.

“There is a need for this life-saving service in Iroquois County, and we are so grateful for the advocacy and partnership with community leaders, such as State Sen. Tom Bennett, Watseka Mayor John Allhands, TNS Developments, LLC, local law enforcement, and countless others who have helped make this a reality,” said Jenny Schoenwetter, executive director and CEO of Harbor House.

“This space was intentionally designed to help survivors find comfort, healing, joy, and peace during their journeys to freedom and happiness. Our well-trained, passionate advocates are ready to walk alongside survivors in this new Emergency Shelter,” Schoenwetter continued.

The main point of entry for all Harbor House services, including the two emergency shelters, is the 24-hour hotline at 815-932-5800. If survivors feel they need emergency shelter, call the hotline, and an advocate will ask questions about their situation, help create a safety plan, and provide emotional support as they process their situation. Shelter eligibility decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.

The Domestic Violence Emergency Shelter will serve as a haven of safety for survivors fleeing or homeless due to domestic violence.
