I want to thank everyone who called and texted me with restaurant recommendations in the past two weeks.  I had asked in a previous column for suggestions for local eateries.

I got lots of very nice calls from some readers of my column. Most suggested restaurants in other neighborhoods and nearby suburbs. I will definitely try and visit them.

I also want to say that I specifically asked for local suggestions. I guess some people do not follow instructions and completely disregard what I say. I could mention specific names of people, but I do not want to gossip. I actually would like to gossip.

My New Year’s resolution to not indulge in gossip has failed completely. It was a stupid idea that a friend of mine suggested. She is totally clueless. I really don’t know why she thought of me and gossip problems.

I talked to my brother, Steve, about this. He said that I should set reasonable goals for myself. Steve said my New Year’s resolution should be to not make New Year’s resolutions anymore. Sounds reasonable to me. Thanks, Steve!

Back to restaurant suggestions, one reader recommended a longtime neighborhood favorite, Huck Finn restaurant at Pulaski and Marquette Road. Good choice.  Hubby and I did eat there recently, and I must say the food is still very good, especially their coffee. The breakfast foods are tasty, and the portions are generous.

I also like their soups and sandwiches. The wait staff is always friendly. Huck Finn is dependable. You go there with an idea of what you want and they have it. My hubby wanted their cinnamon roll French toast and that’s just what he got. I think that is his favorite menu item.

Huck Finn is no longer a 24/7 restaurant. Their new hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Dine in or to go. Call 773-581-4285.

Speaking of delicious food, Feb. 3 is National Carrot Cake Day. Celebrate responsibly.

The Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture, 6500 S. Pulaski, will be presenting the opera Don Quichotte, the third in their opera and concert series.  It will take place on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 1 p.m. Call for ticket information at 773-582-6500 or visit balzekasmuseum.org.

St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 6424 S. Kenneth. will be having their annual Casino Nights on Feb. 10 and 11 from 6 p.m. to midnight. There will be raffles, blackjack, roulette, craps, Texas hold ’em, a money wheel and more. You must be 21 to enter. Call for more details at 773-767-6160.

The Calvary Lutheran Church Senior Club would like to wish a very happy February birthday to Karin E. and Cindy V.  May the dear Lord bless you both with a happy birthday celebration and healthy year to come.

My condolences to the family and friends of Patricia Palanyk on her recent passing.  Pat was a longtime West Lawn resident and former Southwest News-Herald neighborhood correspondent. May she rest in peace.

Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.
