The Kankakee City Council at their Tuesday, January 17, meeting voted to repeal the vehicle sticker tax. Mayor Chris Curtis had suggested the unpopular tax might be able to end if voters approved maintaining the city’s home rule taxing authority on the November ballot, which they did.
“The administration started looking at ways to eliminate the stickers,” Curtis said, even before approving a ballot measure to maintain home rule. It became necessary when the state’s automatic authority for that status expired after the latest census indicated the city’s population dropped below 25,000. The mayor added, “the solid financial condition the city is in made the stickers no longer necessary.”
