Brookfield trustees have adopted t a comprehensive text amendment to Chapter 62 of the village zoning code and an amended zoning map.
The vote completed a rewrite that began in 2024.
Trustees voted in favor of the changes, 6-0 at their Oct. 12 board meeting.
“It’s taken nearly two and a half years of technical review, public discussion, and countless hours of work,” Trustee Jennifer Hendricks said.
Hendricks said the update “gives Brookfield a modern zoning code that’s clearer, more predictable, more equitable, more streamlined.”
The new code includes a landscape code, which Hendricks said was a primary goal when she ran for the board.
She said her daily work with development projects shows her that “landscaping is very easy to overlook unless it’s required.”
Village President Michael J. Garvey said the update “was long overdue.” He credited community meetings, village staff, the village’s consultant and the Planning and Zoning Commission, which reviewed the draft and made recommendations to the board.
Hendricks also thanked members of the zoning update commission, volunteers who she said read “hundreds and hundreds of pages of documents.”
