David Duane “Dave” Mack, a former mayor and village trustee of Justice who also served as a volunteer firefighter there, died Oct. 29 in La Grange after a battle with brain cancer.
Mack was born Oct. 22, 1952, in Oak Park. He spent his career at UOP in McCook. His family said he was the youngest suburban mayor of his time.
A lifelong Cubs fan, he saw them win the World Series. He traveled widely, loved Broadway shows and was a frequent visitor to Drury Lane with his best friend, Trinidad Soto. Halloween and Christmas were his favorite holidays.
He liked scratchers and the buffalo slot machine. He teased his nieces and nephews just enough to send them back to their parents laughing, and ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” often had everyone around him playing air piano along with him.
In his last years, he cared for his father and for Jeanne Mack, and he passed up vacations to stay home with them.
He is survived by his mother, Jeanne Mack; his sisters, Tracy Fink and her husband, Michael, and Victoria McDonough and her husband, Vincent; his best friend, Trinidad Soto; his nieces and nephews, Matthew Fink, Elizabeth Fink, Stacy Vandenburg and her husband, Jeff, Robert O’Dowd and his wife, Lisa, Frank O’Dowd and his wife, Alyse, David O’Dowd and his wife, Jesselin, Courtney Ryan and Brianna McDonough; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Peggy Foerg; his father, George Mack Jr.; his sister, Shirley Jo Mack; and his brothers, Daniel O’Dowd and Robert O’Dowd.
Visitation is scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, at Damar-Kaminski Funeral Home & Crematorium, 7861 S. 88th Ave., Justice. A service and time of remembrance is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Bethania Cemetery in Justice.
